The House Key

During a high school graduation celebration dinner thrown for us seniors by our church back in 1998, a family friend said to our group, "Once you enter college, you are no longer a resident of your household. You'll always only be a guest."

But lately, I've been even sadder about this because within the last 6 months or so, I went back to Cleveland to find out that both the key locks for the front door and the door going to the garage are respectively completely out of commission in their own special ways... so no keys can be used anymore... we can only get through via the garage door and only if there's someone that has a garage door opener... I feel more and more like a guest than ever... and today, on my way out, I saw a set of door locks on the staircase... a lock that I don't have a key to... I'll definitely ask for one, but still...

As for the old key, hell yeah I'm going to hang on to it... if a picture paints a thousand words, a key paints a thousand memories...

Soooo burned!

Today is the 1 week anniversary of coming back from probably the awesomest vacation... I spent Thurs to Sun with John in Fort Myers, FL. Stayed on Fort Myers Beach. I think the best part of it was on Friday when I woke up and I knew I was going to spend my day in sunny upper 70's weather AND NOT WORKING, versus my co-workers at home who's praying for no snow!!! That was awesome... but I absolutly loved where we stayed... it was Best Western on the beach... the balcony faced the Gulf...

Thurs night John and I stayed up talking about 4:30am... that I must say was probably one of the best things that happened last weekend to us... we're both busy people, hang out with a lot of people very often, it's rare to have quiet moments like these just between the 2 of us and we can talk about everything until the wee hours of the night... I'll do that again any day... it's great to know you connect on more than 1 level... and it's a lot of fun talking w/ John... he's very fascinating... and as tame as that sounded (versus partying it up at the hotel nearby all afternoon the next day in the hot sun), I actually found that to be very romantic, talking on the oceanview balcony hearing the waves and seeing some crazy kids on the shoreline doing some "crazy" stuff... we got a kick out of that... haha

Sat was when we brought this on to ourselves... apparently the FL sun was very strong and we didn't put enough sunblock on... ick... it was hard to tell when you start burning when you have the wind constantly blowing on you to blow the heat off... we were both bright red for the next few days... my red just died down couple of days ago... when we got back, we each had to soak in a tub of cold water to calm down the still burning arms and legs and chest... owww... and putting clothes on Mon morning to go to work was flat out agony... wish I could've gone to work half naked... then Wed rolled around and I've started peeling (and still is)... but I'm glad the office legs got to see what the sun looked like...

I miss Florida... I want to go again... I'm ready for my next trip though... it'll probably be NYC... yes!!! It's been a long time, but I'm ready to go back!

Here are some more pictures from the weekend:

I forgot...

Apparently I forgot to add a #11 to the list of crazy stuff I found out... actually make that a few more...

I found out 3 high school friends got married... for years now...

and now #11. Eunice went snowboarding for the first time couple of weekends ago and broke her right wrist and badly sprained her left wrist. She said she didn't cry until Petros touched it... she's apparently in a full arm cast on her right arm and a cast up to her elbow on the left arm... I wonder how her left hand handwriting is since she's a rightie...

Updates

Unfortunately, this isn't an update about me... BUT...

Basically, lately I've been thinking that I'm horrible in keeping in touch with people that I've known for many years, but talk to people that I've known for maybe less than a year almost everyday... I suppose partly it's because all the people I grew up w/ went their own separate ways... and I landed here in Detroit so I end up talking to people here that I've met almost daily cause that's who's around me...

I found out through IM that a childhood friend that I apparently haven't talked to since the summer that she got engaged in September and is getting married in 2 weeks... and when I finally did feel like dropping in on her (about a week ago), I was like, so, getting married soon? She said, yup, on March 18th... ouch... obviously I'm not invited to the wedding, but it's totally cool cause I know weddings are crazy expensive, and for a supposed "friend" to not have talked to her in months to not even know she's getting married doesn't deserve to be invited...

So... feeling like I've missed out on my friends' lives, I went on this Xanga frenzy... starting at my brother's xanga and linked my way around from the Cleveland and Detroit crew and beyond... and I tried to catch a bit of news here and there when I went back to Cleveland to try to make myself feel better from  not finding out from the people directly... I'm sure I'm still not totally caught up... so here's a few things I found out and how I found them out and still shocked/amazed/happy for... if you belong to the Cleveland crew also and haven't talked to anyone else lately, here's a synopsis for you too so that you can't say "no one tells me these things"...

1. Andrew (one of the twins) is getting married this year (I didn't know he was engaged until months after)
2. Laura's having her 2nd baby, if not already (found out from her cousin couple of months ago)
3. Melody's in Baltimore doing her residency (I still keep in touch w/ her)
4. Colleen's in Boston in seminary (I still keep in touch w/ her too)
5. Vic and Jen are having a baby soon (found out through Vicki over Christmas)
6. Ken & Grace already has their 2nd baby!!!!! (that's through Xanga) - I missed out on the first one too
7. Petros got accepted to University of Cincinnati (Xanga)
8. Frank & Gloria has a boy that turned 1 recently (xanga)
9. Dave's mom had to have surgery to remove some mass (xanga... I don't even know what it is still)
10. Lynnette (from Detroit) got engaged in December, getting married in June (this I got in my email for)

I found out all of that within in a span of 30 days... and that's not all... and to realize how long it's been since I talked to these people (especially the ones that got pregnant and are having a baby soon, or already, or 2)... that's at least 9 months... If I make a running list right now of all the people I know (only including friends my age) vs the people I actually still keep in touch with, I know I'll feel so ashamed I will need to hide in the corner and rock back and forth... so I won't do that right now... but the day I'll have to do that will be a sad sad day (the day when I have to put together some sort on invite list)...

If any of you read this and we haven't talked in awhile, my email is vickie_yeung@yahoo.com and my SN is FoneCompnysSuck if you want to say hi and catch up some time... in the mean time I'll keep searching for you
